WILSON TALKS IMPROVISING NEW AWARD-WINNING SHORT “SATELLITE BEACH”

Michael Barnes from The Austin Movie blog sits down to with Luke Wilson and Steve Eckelman of ‘Satellite Beach

They chose a well-worn corner of Güero’s Taco Bar on South Congress Avenue for the chat. Luke Wilson and Steve Eckelman were familiar with the menu and the staff. Austin resident Eckelman employs the eatery as “an office away from the office,” while frequent visitor Wilson has long enjoyed its South Congress vibe.

“I’ve known Steve since I was 9,” says the youngest of Hollywood’s Wilson brothers, who grew up in Dallas. “He was in school with my brother Andrew and was one of those guys who didn’t know that a senior in high school is not usually friends with somebody in fifth grade.”

Eckelman — thin, fair, precise — has worked as a personal assistant on various Wilson-related movies. He produced with Wilson — stolid, funny, a bit shaggy today — “Satellite Beach,” a short that follows the Endeavour space shuttle on its last journey through the streets of Los Angeles to the California Science Center and the transfer of the Atlantis space shuttle to the Kennedy Space Center. It screens 8:30 Friday at Spider House.

Before that, Wilson will emcee the Texas Film Awards at Austin Studios on Thursday.

The longtime friends are also working on “Juarez 9,” an Wilson-penned action comedy set in Mexico, and then “Tower,” a documentary based on the Charles Whitman shootings at the University of Texas in 1966, inspired by Pam Colloff’s article in Texas Monthly.

Wilson got the idea for “Satellite Beach” from an article in the Los Angeles Times about how the Endeavor would piggyback on a 747, land at LAX, then travel very slowly 11 or 12 miles through the urban streets to the science center. Eight hundred trees were removed to make way for the behemoth.

LUKAS NELSON AND PROMISE OF THE REAL SATELLITE BEACH SCORE

LUKAS NELSON and PROMISE OF THE REAL ON SATELLITE BEACH SCORE

Lukas Nelson & P.O.T.R. have kicked off the 2014 awards season on a high note. The group won the prestigious Bruce Corwin Award at the 29th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Feb. 9 for the score they wrote for the film ‘Satellite Beach,’ starring brothers Luke and Andrew Wilson.

“Luke Wilson and I are great friends,” Nelson explains. “He’s a huge music fan and a great guy to boot. Working on ‘Satellite Beach’ was the first professional collaboration we’ve had. It was the first time the band and I had done any film scoring, but we were presented with some incredible footage of the space shuttle, so the music just seemed to pour out.”

The music got high praise from Luke Wilson.

“To me, music is a character in movies,” he notes. “[The songs] are great. Ethereal. And wistful and upbeat. And they take ‘Satellite Beach’ home. And now when I watch it — it’s my favorite part of the movie. What these four players built out of nothing to help an idea along. So if you get the chance, watch ‘Satellite Beach.’ And listen to the band. And if you’re lucky — they’ll be at a town near you sometime soon and you can see them in person. They make it happen.”

‘Satellite Beach,’ which won an award for Best Live Action Short Film Under 30 Minutes, was recorded at producer John Avila’s home studio.

“Together with John, we were able to score a beautiful film, and I am happy to say the process was relaxed and creative,” Nelson says. “There is nothing better than working with good friends.”

Nelson, who is the son of Willie Nelson, is working on a new project with his band, which he says is a lot more upbeat than their 2012 record, ‘Wasted.’

The group is spending most of the next few months on the road, including shows in Arkansas, Kansas and New Orleans this week. See all of their upcoming shows here.

A little History about the RxSM Festival
The 5th Annual RxSM Self-Medicated Film Expo (RxSM), unfolds once again this year alongside South by Southwest, one of the most beloved cultural events in Austin, Texas. RxSM shines a bright spotlight on talented filmmakers in the thick of the busy festival circuit. Each March, thousands of cinephiles descend on Austin to get a glimpse of the incredibly inspired work being done in indie cinema, and RxSM is eager to provide it.

Each year, RxSM doles out 17 awards to its best and brightest talents and offers each award-winning project the opportunity to screen at The Victoria Texas Independent Film Festival in April. In the wake of its success at RxSM, The Dynamiter soared to extraordinary heights, nabbing two nominations at The Independent Spirit Awards and winning Best Director. “In this increasingly crowded marketplace,” notes the film’s director Matthew Gordon, “the RxSM film expo represents a way for small films like ours to reach an audience that we would otherwise be unable to reach.”
