Filmmakers for years have always made comedies, dramas, documentaries, shorts, and other genres that examine issues that face the LGBT community everyday.  More recently filmmakers have stepped it up to cover a wider range of topics than what used to define the guidelines of queer cinema, according to the organizers of the festival.  Kirsten Schaffer, Outfest‘s executive director says, “It’s exciting to see the kinds of films that directors are making these days and the kinds of stories that they’re telling.  When you think about what was screened here over three decades ago and what filmmakers are making now, filmmaking has evolved, storytelling has evolved and, certainly, LGBT storytelling has changed.”

This years theme for the Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival evolved after the creators watched over 700 entries for the festival.  The theme is heroes, and they will focus on individuals who have made a difference.  Some of the subjects filmmakers touched on this year include marriage equality, conflicts with religion, bullying, homophobia in other parts of the world and growing old gay.

Outfest Los Angeles Film Festival will start today and run through next week.  Some of the venues include the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles.  The Under the Stars and Closing Night will be held at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood.  Other venues include the Harmony Gold Theatre on Sunset Boulevard, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles and Sundance Cinemas Sunset 5 in West Hollywood.  Outfest Los Angeles will also host a Family Fun Day: L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center’s Village at Ed Gould Plaza in Los Angeles.

Tickets to most screenings and events are $13. Centerpiece and Under the Stars screenings are $18.  If you are in the area and want to check out some really great meaningful films, check out Outfest Los Angeles and support the LGBT community!
