Christopher Mallick Talks About Discovering New Acting Talent

Founder/Owner Of Oxymoron Entertainment

Tip Of The Day: Discovering new talent is one of the most exciting parts of working in the Entertainment Industry.  Christopher Mallick see’s hundreds of new faces and there are always 1 or 2 actors that stand out and make an impression on the filmmakers. There is a certain energy that separates an amazing actor and it’s an innate energy that they posses.  These specific actors  capture your interest immediately leaving a distinct impact on you and those around.  Now this doesn’t mean that they are the most beautiful person in the room.  This person shows ambition, confidence, and an overall love for their craft.  Christopher Mallick has always had an eye for new talent and is able to recognize this from a mile away.

When an actor is auditioning for a role, it is very important that they pay attention to specifics.  The ability to understand the minute details of how a character was written shows adaptability and helps he or she transform into the character the filmmakers are looking for.  Christopher Mallick thinks that actors should focus on being authentic, on being present and being in the moment.  Authenticity is one of the main reasons why a new talent is discovered and as well as an overall connection to the character.

Film International Review by Robert Kenneth Dator for After Porn Ends  “Can they really live a normal life after porn?”: After Porn Ends (2012)

The title of this review, lifted from the publicity tagline, assumes the pitch of a midway barker outside the hoochie-coo tent at a wheat belt carnival. “See for yourself! She teases the imagination; he prods the curious, which is everyone, little lady, to take a peek! Go on now, my good sir, past the pretty lady and the handsome gent; go on in there, right there in the dark—is your heart pounding m’dear—and behold!”

They hailed from the rural South, steel towns, and the San Fernando Valley. As teenagers, and young adults, none of them thought that porn was in their future. They were artists, baseball players, child prodigies, and even Ivy Leaguers. Now, after their lives in porn; they’re television stars, bounty hunters, writers, and social activists. What happened in between?

At least, this is what the press kit asks. But as with the wheat belt hoochie-coo, the dirty little secret is—there is nothing whatever salacious going on. In fact the pitch begs a happy ending. But the viewer will have to decide as the perennials and superstars of a thriving porno industry’s past – such as the late, and charming, John Leslie; its present, the beautiful and confused, Raylene; and those on the cusp of the future, the disturbingly unselfconscious, Mary Carey – wrestle with the hard questions that attend a harder life.

“After Porn Ends,” directed by alumnus Bryce Wagoner in 2010, is the number one documentary on iTunes.

A stay-at-home mom, a bounty hunter, a writer and other inherently “normal” citizens starring in the leading roles of everyday life. It may be invisible to some that these individuals were once stars in the adult entertainment industry.

ECU graduate Bryce Wagoner knew that this film, “After Porn Ends,” would provoke interest to his target audience by answering the questions of whether or not someone could live a normal life after living the life of a porn star. The film takes a view into the lives of real people who found their way in and out of the erotic film industry.

“I think that people from ECU will identify with them,” said Wagoner. “I think everybody from every walk of life will be able to identify…men and women from all different socioeconomic backgrounds.”

Just like a senior graduating from college stuck between the cross roads, Wagoner captured the hardships these former porn stars face when they’ve realized they’re at a point in their life where the industry isn’t for them.

“A lot of them have a really hard time getting back into the real world,” said Wagoner.

On May 29, Yahoo! announced Wagoner’s film as the number one documentary download on iTunes and number 31 movie download overall.

Wagoner says his successes didn’t just happen over night.

He contributes his rise to the top to the fact that he has Purple and Gold blood pumping through his veins.

“I always like to think that the chip on my shoulder is from being a Pirate,” said Wagoner. “That’s what we’re famous for… we’re the little b*****d school of North Carolina, but we still go out there and we fight harder than everybody else.”

A proud Pirate and member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, Wagoner says his time in Greenville was filled with nothing but great memories and is still a big part of his life.

“My time working in my fraternity helped me learn so much about organization and leadership skills that are actually really important to what I do as director,” said Wagoner. “The best thing about ECU is that they really let me dream…and they cultivated that and let me learn in a safe place.”

Coming from the small town of Lynchburg, Va., Wagoner knew Hollywood wasn’t just going to hand him success on a silver platter.

“So many people come out to Hollywood and they just try to jump in head first,” said Wagoner. “Yes, you have the talent and passion and all that good stuff, but unless you want to be a reality TV star, you have to work at it, and my time at East Carolina got me ready for that.”

When he graduated from military school, Wagoner entered the university as an exercise science and sports medicine major.

“I was getting close to graduating when hurricane Floyd hit,” he said. “I got back to classes and something inside me said that I don’t want to do this anymore.”

Like many college students do to find themselves, Wagoner took a semester off.

“I realized how much I always wrote in my free time,” said Wagoner.

Wagoner’s siblings were also studying theater at the time. “I just felt like I was denying my DNA,” said Wagoner.

After taking his first theatre class, Wagoner found his calling.

“I realized that this is what I have to do. I have to tell stories,” said Wagoner. “Either through a script that I’m reading or a script that I’m writing.”

After graduating, Wagoner packed his bag with the aspirations of becoming a successful director, producer, writer and actor he has become over the past decade.

“There’s a saying out here in L.A. and they call it the 10 year overnight success,” said Wagoner. “And for me it happens to be my 10th year.”

Wagoner stresses time as the key to having a competitive edge in an industry, like film.

“The most successful people you see, even people who went to the top film schools in the country, they spend some time…a lot of time,” Wagoner said. “And, that’s the right path…that’s what weeds the people who have and have not, the passion to do this.”

When Wagoner had the idea for “After Porn Ends,” he spent two years pitching the story.

“When finally I got the opportunity, I was ready,” said Wagoner. “Before the film was even finished, I had six other projects ready to go.”

Wagoner says it’s about taking the things that you love and making them better, marketable and viable.

“You don’t have to be in film to be passionate and successful and be creative,” said Wagoner. “I think if you have an open mind and the willingness to learn, life is going to be great.”

On top of directing one of the top independent films on the market, Bryce Wagoner has played lead performance rolls in films like the Emmy nominated television movie “The Flight that Fought Back,” as well as heading the production of other projects through his own company, Shield Pirate Productions.

Bryce Wagoner’s film, “After Porn Ends” will be premiering on Netflix on Monday.

New Horror Film Ninety From Oxymoron Entertainment Set To Out-Gore Saw?

It’s very rare to find an in-production movie on which virtually nothing is written or known, but that seems to be the case with the horror film Ninety, an Oxymoron Entertainment production that sounds like a cross between Se7en and Natural Born Killers. Director Darren Lynn Bousman says there will be a fun, camp element at play in the film as well.

Who is Darren Lynn Bousman? You ask.

Bousman helmed three installments (II, III, and IV) of the Saw series, which basically created the gore horror genre–or at least the newest generation of gore–and arguably comprises the biggest horror franchise of this century. Only the Final Destination series holds a candle as far as box office and number of sequels. If there’s anyone who understands the trends behind commercially successful horror films–and jaw-droppingly gruesome death scenes–it is Bousman.

It’s hard to find much information about Ninety. Without a IMDBPro account, which still only contains a skeletal synopsis, you’re left piecing together scant details of a project with a few attached actors and a basic slugline. The latter is certainly intriguing. The film is about a psychopathic, though wrongfully accused, felon who escapes from prison with a dramatically morbid objective: to commit 90 murders in 90 minutes while being chased by the detective that put him away in the first place.

That’s right, the movie will contain 90 murders, each one uniquely depraved. This seems like fairly usual terrain in the American cinema landscape that may afford ample opportunities for satire and trenchant social examination on top of the action. Even other recent horror film franchises like Hostel and The Hills Have Eyes have been able to integrate blistering critiques into their rather straight forward plots.

Produced by serial entrepreneur Christopher Mallick, who gave us Middle Men and this year’s Columbus Circle, Ninety sounds like it will continue in a unique tradition of truly bizarre movie plots told without apology or capitulation. Mallick, in addition to owning Oxymoron, also founded Stereo D, a 2D to 3D conversion studio he co-owns with actor/producer Giovanni Ribisi.

George Gallo, who directed both Middle Men and Columbus Circle, claims both films were approached as stories that needed to push forward relentlessly without stopping to explain themselves too much. Gallo and Mallick believe this cinematic strategy forces the viewer to pay closer attention, as even blinking once could allow a critical plot detail to be missed.

We can likely expect Ninety to follow a similarly relentless formula.
