ANGELINA JOLIE’S DOUBLE MASTECTOMY RAISES AWARENESS AROUND THE WORLD

Angelina Jolie’s Double Mastectomy Raises Awareness Around the World

Celebrities have a lot of influence on people outside of Hollywood.  Recently, Angelina Jolie released an op-ed piece in the New York Times announcing her double mastectomy.  Our hearts, as well as many others I’m sure, went out to this courageous woman last week.

Angelina Jolie’s double mastectomy was the result of a blood test that told her of a certain gene she carries that could end up giving her breast cancer.  Angelina Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died at a very young age from from ovarian cancer.  The actress knew she needed to be tested for the gene that could cause breast cancer and ovarian cancer.  Based on the results of this testing, she decided to remove both of her breasts to prevent any cancer because she was told she had up to an 87% chance of developing the disease.

We think that Angelina Jolie’s double mastectomy was not only a brave decision as a woman, but to come forward as an actress and share her story was wonderful as well.  Any celebrity in Hollywood can have a lot of influence on society and especially raise awareness for some of these big issues that we face.  By sharing her story about her double mastectomy, Angelina Jolie has brought so much attention to the issue of breast and ovarian cancer as well as its testing and ways to prevent it.  We salute Angelina Jolie for this.

Angelina Jolie is not the only influential person to undergo a double mastectomy.  There are quite a few celebrities who share this same issue and surgery with her.  In 2008, Christina Applegate also underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer.  Although her cancer was only in one breast, she too carried the gene that put her at higher risk of a relapse and ovarian cancer.

Kathy Bates beat ovarian cancer in 2003.  Last summer doctors discovered a lump in one of her breasts and after much thought and consideration, Kathy decided to go through with a double mastectomy.

After discovering that she carried the breast cancer gene, Sharon Osbourne decided to have a preventative double mastectomy as well.

In 2011, E! Entertainment Host Giuliana Rancic was diagnosed with breast cancer.  She too opted to have a double mastectomy to prevent any relapse or cancer.

Many other people in the public eye have undergone surgery to remove their breasts in order to prevent or treat breast cancer.  Comedian Wanda Sykes and TV star Michelle Heaton both underwent the surgery as well.  So, as you can see Angelina Jolie’s double mastectomy has not been the only one in Hollywood.  All of these women have been so brave in sharing their stories in order to help other women prevent breast and ovarian cancer.  We salute them and any other brave women going through something similar.  These women have helped bring awareness to so many lives and they may prevent someone from getting cancer, and for that we will be forever grateful.

The Cannes Film Festival or the Festival de Cannes kicked off on Wednesday this week with the premier of The Great Gatsby.  According to their website festival-cannes.fr the Festival de Cannes has remained faithful to its founding purpose: to draw attention to and raise the profile of films with the aim of contributing towards the development of cinema, boosting the film industry worldwide and celebrating cinema at an international level.  The Cannes Film Festival turned 65 this year and is one of the most prestigious festivals in the world, thanks to the support and attendance of some of the biggest celebrities!  In the 1950s The Cannes Film Festival became more popular because of the attendance of some of the wealthiest celebrities of that time.  Actors and actresses such as Kirk Douglas, Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, and Cary Grant brought a lot of attention to the festival.  Check out the photo below.  These stars had such great style even back then!
