WILSON TALKS IMPROVISING NEW AWARD-WINNING SHORT “SATELLITE BEACH”

Michael Barnes from The Austin Movie blog sits down to with Luke Wilson and Steve Eckelman of ‘Satellite Beach

They chose a well-worn corner of Güero’s Taco Bar on South Congress Avenue for the chat. Luke Wilson and Steve Eckelman were familiar with the menu and the staff. Austin resident Eckelman employs the eatery as “an office away from the office,” while frequent visitor Wilson has long enjoyed its South Congress vibe.

“I’ve known Steve since I was 9,” says the youngest of Hollywood’s Wilson brothers, who grew up in Dallas. “He was in school with my brother Andrew and was one of those guys who didn’t know that a senior in high school is not usually friends with somebody in fifth grade.”

Eckelman — thin, fair, precise — has worked as a personal assistant on various Wilson-related movies. He produced with Wilson — stolid, funny, a bit shaggy today — “Satellite Beach,” a short that follows the Endeavour space shuttle on its last journey through the streets of Los Angeles to the California Science Center and the transfer of the Atlantis space shuttle to the Kennedy Space Center. It screens 8:30 Friday at Spider House.

Before that, Wilson will emcee the Texas Film Awards at Austin Studios on Thursday.

The longtime friends are also working on “Juarez 9,” an Wilson-penned action comedy set in Mexico, and then “Tower,” a documentary based on the Charles Whitman shootings at the University of Texas in 1966, inspired by Pam Colloff’s article in Texas Monthly.

Wilson got the idea for “Satellite Beach” from an article in the Los Angeles Times about how the Endeavor would piggyback on a 747, land at LAX, then travel very slowly 11 or 12 miles through the urban streets to the science center. Eight hundred trees were removed to make way for the behemoth.

SATELLITE BEACH follows the unique journey of the Endeavour space shuttle as it travels through the streets of Los Angeles to the California Science Center and the final move of the Atlantis space shuttle to the Kennedy Space Center.

Via Wikipedia:

Space Shuttle Endeavour (Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-105) is one of the retired orbiters of the Space Shuttle program of NASA, the space agency of the United States.[1] Endeavour was the fifth and final spaceworthy NASA space shuttle to be built, and first flew in May 1992 on mission STS-49 with its last mission being STS-134 in May 2011.[2][3] The STS-134 mission was originally planned as the final mission of the Space Shuttle program,[4] but with authorization of the STS-135 mission, Atlantis became the last Space Shuttle to fly.

The United States Congress authorized the construction of Endeavour in 1987 to replace Challenger, which was lost in the STS-51-L launch accident where the Space Shuttle Challenger blew up about two minutes into flight in 1986. Structural spares built during the construction of Discovery and Atlantis, two of the previous shuttles, were used in its assembly. NASA chose to build Endeavour from spares rather than refitting Enterprise or accepting a Rockwell International proposal to build two shuttles for the price of one of the original shuttles, on cost grounds.

A little History about the RxSM Festival
The 5th Annual RxSM Self-Medicated Film Expo (RxSM), unfolds once again this year alongside South by Southwest, one of the most beloved cultural events in Austin, Texas. RxSM shines a bright spotlight on talented filmmakers in the thick of the busy festival circuit. Each March, thousands of cinephiles descend on Austin to get a glimpse of the incredibly inspired work being done in indie cinema, and RxSM is eager to provide it.

Each year, RxSM doles out 17 awards to its best and brightest talents and offers each award-winning project the opportunity to screen at The Victoria Texas Independent Film Festival in April. In the wake of its success at RxSM, The Dynamiter soared to extraordinary heights, nabbing two nominations at The Independent Spirit Awards and winning Best Director. “In this increasingly crowded marketplace,” notes the film’s director Matthew Gordon, “the RxSM film expo represents a way for small films like ours to reach an audience that we would otherwise be unable to reach.”
